TLC Native Plant Identification - Land for Wildlife Workshop 2026

Looking to level up your plant identification skills? Join Land for Wildlife coordinators, Anna Povey and Phil Wise, for a day in the field learning how to identify our local native plants. It is an excellent workshop to build on some already basic plant ID skills and learn what to look for when distinguishing between species. This is also a great chance to meet other Land for Wildlife members. We will spend some time indoors and some time walking a loop track along North West Bay River trail to Sandfly oval on established tracks through the bush.

This will be a field-based event for people with beginner-intermediate plant ID skills, focused on:

• features of plants to look for (flower parts, fruit, leaf arrangement, scents etc.)

• identifying features of common plant families (this helps you to narrow down your choices)

• resources for identification (such as the app, iNaturalist, websites, good books, Flips etc.)

• how to use a simple identification key

• why scientific names are actually useful and help you to understand much more (and how to pronounce them).

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW 

Time: We will meet at the Sandfly Hall at 9:45am for a 10am start.

What's included: Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided.

Participants will need to be self-sufficient for a few hours in the field. Expect to be walking on undulating and sloping ground at times, and the weather may be warm or cold! The event will occur whether or not there is rain.

Getting there: The Sandfly Hall is at 811 Sandfly Road, Sandfly close to Sandfly General Store. You will be able to park at the facilities.

Lunch, snacks and a drink as well as clothing for Tassie's ever-changing weather. We'll send you a reminder with a list closer to the day.

Please download the excellent free app iNaturalist before you come.  Get yourself logged in so it’s ready to go. 

Registration:
As always, places for the trip will be limited, so please register online as soon as you can. 

Revenue from ticket sales goes towards covering the cost of hosting TLC events. There is no need to bring your tickets on the day - we will have an attendee list. 

In the event of inclement weather, or a regional total fire ban, the event will be postponed or cancelled and we will notify you by email on the evening of Thursday 29 October. The TLC will refund tickets in full if the event is cancelled. Please note that TLC can take no financial responsibility for attendees' pre-booked accommodation, in the event of a cancellation.
