Event description

This workshop presents an opportunity to engage in the work of PhD Candidate Sonja Hindrum, during her exhibition at Sawtooth ARI Gallery. Listen to an introductory talk about SCOBY (Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria and Yeast) and her research, then participate in a collaborative session with Sonja and The More Than Human Orchestra (MTHO) at the Kitchen Table. Supported by Sawtooth ARI and City of Launceston.

The More Than Human Orchestra (MTHO) at the kitchen table The MTHO are the Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria and Yeast. (SCOBY). This is the gel that forms when home-brewing Kombucha. When people connect with the fleshy gelatinous SCOBY an audible sound is generated But it is not only the style of connection, a pinch, poke, stroke, or squeeze that determines tone; it is also the hydration of the person and the SCOBY. Increased hydration will generate a higher-pitched sound, while lower hydration will produce a lower-pitched sound. The atmosphere also comes into play and will affect the hydration of the SCOBY and the sounds generated. The energy of the sounds connects with all agents present; the atmosphere, the humidity, the physical touch, the sound waves. All are collaborating in that moment. The work invites you to be present in the moment, tuning into the sounds around you.
