Lipoedema Awareness Month Gold Coast Morning Tea

About the Event:

To celebrate Lipoedema Awareness Month, Dr Chris Lekich and the Lipoedema Surgical Solution Team are inviting you to a morning tea to celebrate YOU. Please join us to connect with other women on a Lipoedema journey and empower yourself with their stories. As well as our Gold Coast event, we will also be holding events in both Melbourne and Sydney. If these locations aren’t convenient for you, consider hosting your own morning tea with our support!.

Lipoedema, a condition that affects up to 1 in 10 women in Australia yet is still often misunderstood, is filled with stories of resilience and strength. Our events aim to provide a nurturing environment for support, connection, and the freedom to be yourself. The morning tea will begin with a light-hearted activity, followed by the opportunity to mingle, and have a coffee with morning tea on us. There will be plenty of opportunities for photos and sharing, and all guests that attend will receive a small gift, commissioned by us from fellow Lipoedema advocate Elise Miller. One lucky attendee will also win the lucky door prize, a mindfulness gift pack curated by our team from female artists and designers. In honour of the occasion and to continue raising awareness, our team will be wearing pink shirts, and we encourage you to also either wear pink or add something pink to your outfit (such as a headband or scarf) to show your support.

Raising Lipoedema Awareness:

Dr Chris Lekich and The Lipoedema Surgical Solution Team remain committed to raising awareness for Lipoedema. As part of that commitment, our team will have a professional photographer on site to document the event, as well as team members interacting with guests and holding short, impromptu interviews. These photos and videos, along with accompanying audio, will be shared on our website, social media pages and other related material with the aim to highlight Lipoedema Awareness and the treatment options available. While you are under no obligation to participate in interviews or photographs and video directly, by confirming your attendance to this event, you confirm your consent to have photos, videos and/or audio you appear in, either directly or indirectly, shared by us. With that being said, your attendance and participation are greatly encouraged for a number of reasons, not least of all to provide women with Lipoedema with a voice. Other details to note:

As these events are being held both in honour of and to celebrate women with Lipoedema, tickets are reserved primarily for women with Lipoedema. A small number of tickets will be reserved for support people and therapists/practitioners. We ask that you book the appropriate ticket when ‘checking out’ to avoid others missing out unnecessarily. If you have booked a ticket and are no longer able to attend, we encourage you to cancel your spot/s (simply follow the ‘manage order’ prompt on your confirmation email from Humanatix), so that someone from the waiting list can take your spot. To ensure Edgewater Dining can commence their lunch service on time, this event will finish promptly at 11 am. For those wishing to stay on for lunch, the Edgewater Dining Team recommend booking a table via their booking link to avoid disappointment. A 10% discount on lunch is offered to all guests staying on from the Lipoedema Awareness Month Morning Tea, simply mention you are from this event to access the discount. Various options for morning tea will be available, including barista coffee and tea (with milk alternatives) and an array of light breakfast nibbles, including low-carb options. If you have a specific dietary requirement, you have the option to let us know when 'checking out' by midnight on Sunday 26th May. Babies in arms are more than welcome at this event. Whilst we would love to have older toddlers and children attend also, we are unable to cater for them.

Getting to the event:

Edgewater Dining is located at the Capri on Via Roma shopping complex, Isle of Capri. The complex has over 170 car spaces with both an escalator and elevator from the underground car park. The venue has good mobility access and no stairs. For public transport, a bus stop is located in front of the Post Office on Via Roma. Capri on Via Roma is serviced by Translink lines route TX2, 700, 702, 703, 706, 707, 709, 745 & 750. Capri on Via Roma can also be accessed via tram on the Gold Coast's G:Link. The closest station is the Surfers Paradise Station, with an approximate 12-minute walk from the station across the Via Roma bridge to reach the centre. Lipoedema, a chronic condition characterised by the abnormal accumulation of fat cells, affects up to 15% of women and often goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. Despite its prevalence, Lipoedema remains relatively unknown among the general population and even within the medical community. This lack of awareness can lead to delays in diagnosis, ineffective treatments, and a significant impact on the physical and emotional well-being of those affected. That is why Lipoedema education events play a crucial role in raising awareness and fostering support for individuals with Lipoedema.

Dr Chris Lekich and the team at Lipoedema Surgical Solution remain committed to raising Lipoedema awareness, and regularly run educational events which you can view here.

Lipoedema, a greatly misunderstood disease is in need for proper understanding for many reasons including:

 Helping to distinguish obesity and Lymphoedema from Lipoedema, which are very different conditions. This includes doctors, specialists, allied health practitioners, politicians, sufferers of Lipoedema, and the general community.

 To ensure that Lipoedema sufferers receive an early diagnosis. There is currently a generation of women that are stuck with diseased fat in their legs, who given an opportunity at a younger age could have a totally different presentation through early diagnosis and intervention. Early diagnosis can reduce or remove the burden of fat both physically and emotionally.

 To upgrade Australia’s Lipoedema awareness and management to world standard. Dr Lekich’s experience working in Germany for training with Dr Heck was that Australia is 15 years behind Germany with our awareness of Lipoedema. Dr Heck visited Australia to establish his surgical protocol with Dr Lekich and they arranged Information Events around the country for Lipoedema patients with the two doctors presenting alongside the Lipoedema Warriors Support Group. At these Information Events Lipoedema sufferers were attending with advanced Lipoedema without any compression, without an understanding of manual lymphatic drainage and conservative management options.

 To assist women with Lipoedema feel less isolated and stigmatised by ignorance about the condition; and being dismissed as obese and/or lazy.

 To provide women with Lipoedema with a voice, so they can receive the vital recognition and support from government, medical professionals, allied health practitioners, as well as their family, friends and the general community.

Dr Chris Lekich is the Medical Director of Lipoedema Surgical Solution, CEO of Miami Private Hospital, and has worked in operating theatres for over 20 years.

In his venous practice, Dr. Lekich has conservatively managed Lipoedema for over 16 years. He shifted to the surgical management of the disease once he established the purpose-built, licensed, Miami Private Hospital and training in Germany with Dr Heck.

Dr Lekich has collaborated with the world’s leading Lipoedema Surgeon, Dr Heck of Germany’s LipoClinic. Dr Lekich has made several visits to Germany for personalised training with Dr Heck who has become his mentor and good friend. Dr Heck has also personally spent a number of days visiting Miami Private Hospital in 2017 hosted by Dr Lekich. This technique of Lipoedema-Extraction has been perfected over 20 years, now making it available in Australia.

Apart from Dr Lekich’s extensive training in microsurgery, minimally invasive management of venous disease and Lipoedema surgery, he has a formal law degree, has been admitted to the Bar and has completed a Masters of Business Administration.

These educational Lipoedema events serve as platforms to share knowledge, bridge the information gap, and empower Lipoedema patients, their loved ones and their healthcare professionals to better understand and manage this complex condition.
