LOVE, LONGING, & LUST | Love Studies Network: What's sex got to do with love?

Join us for an afternoon of robust discussion with the Love Studies Network at ECU, focusing on the many ways sexuality is intertwined with our construction of love.

The panel discussion, Love, Longing, & Lust, will explore the long-asked, complex question: What’s sex got to do with love? Our expert panel will delve into how sex, desire, and emotional connection shape our understanding of love, relationships, and identity.

Panellists:

Assoc. Prof. Debra Dudek is an expert in contemporary literature, film, and television for young people, with a focus on social justice, love, and sexuality in texts. She is a Co-Chief Investigator on the ARC Discovery Grant "A comparative investigation into Australian adolescents’ perceptions of harm from accessing online sexual content" and a co-founder of the ECU Love Studies Network.

Renée Webster
, is known for writing and directing the feature film How to Please a Woman (Netflix). She has also directed TV seasons on The Heights and Aftertaste.

Dr Elizabeth Reid Boyd
 is an academic specializing in gender, culture, and etymology. As a widely published author, she writes historical fiction under the pen name Eliza Redgold, with works such as Naked: A Novel of Lady Godiva and romance novels published by HarperCollins. A co-founder of the ECU Love Studies Network, she advocates for the romance novel as a feminist literary form.

Dr. Madalena Grobbelaar
is an academic, clinical psychologist, and psychosexual therapist with a private practice in Western Australia. Her research and clinical focus centre on the role of dysfunctional attachments in adult sexuality, the impact of sexual socialization, and intimate partner violence. Dr. Grobbelaar is a co-founder of the ECU Love Studies Network and has published extensively in these areas. She is also a former president of the WA branch of the Society of Australian Sexologists.

Moderator:

Prof. Alan McKee is an expert on entertainment and healthy sexual development at the University of Sydney. His research focuses on how media influences perceptions of sexuality and relationships, exploring the role of entertainment in shaping cultural attitudes toward sexual health and identity. Prof. McKee's work contributes to understanding how media can promote healthier and more inclusive representations of sexuality.
