Event description
POLICY TABOO: Let's talk about...Pornology, Pornucation & Pornocracy
Join us for a frank and fearless panel discussion on one of society's greatest taboos - pornography.
Pornography has long been seen as outside mainstream culture. This is no longer the case. Pornography is a key facet of contemporary mainstream culture. This is evidenced by political concerns and rhetoric that pornography is a public health crisis. Simultaneously, interest and curiosity in pornography has grown over the last decade. This is reflected by the billions of visits to online adult entertainment websites each year. Furthermore, in recent years there has also been an explosion in the number of "content creators" on various online adult cam platforms.
In overall terms the aims of this panel are to explore and highlight (i) approaches to the study of pornography - i.e. "pornology"; (ii) where and how pornography should be included in age appropriate sex education - i.e. "pornucation"; and (iii) where and how does the regulation of pornography fit within politics and policy making - i.e. "pornocracy".
