Event description

Malaami Project Launch: Learning from Country

We at the Centre for Ecological Learning (CEL) are launching a new initiative called the Malaami Project – the Gumbaynggirr word malaami means “going back to the origin” and was offered by Uncle Micklo Jarrett. The Malaami Project seeks to learn from the original caretakers of Gumbaynggirr Country, in order to move into a balanced and life-sustaining future for humans and more-than-humans. The Malaami Project aims to reimagine a relocalised and climate resilient future for the Bellingen Shire and all of Gumbaynggirr Country and beyond.

Join us at this special launch event as we celebrate and learn from Gumbaynggirr elders and changemakers.

3:00-5:00pm Learning through Culture - featuring Welcome to Country, smoking ceremony, the Buddaabang Bari Dance Group, storytelling, and music with Gunganbu.
5:00-6:00pm Yarning, live music by Mandawuy & Friends, and delicious veggie curry, rice and dahl
available for purchase. There will also be chai and cakes available for purchase.
6:00-8:00pm Learning through Listening to Country
- two public conversations:

  • Conversation 1 - Custodians of the Bellinger, with Auntie Lisa Kelly, Uncle Richard Kelly, and Uncle Micklo Jarrett.
  • Conversation 2: Cultural Land Management and Sovereignty with Nathan Brennan, Dr. Chels Marshall and Rhys Pacey.

All Bellingen Shire residents of all ages are welcome to join us. The event is free-of-charge. Places are limited though - so you must register and show your ticket at the door. Please register all members of your family.  Please let us know if you cannot make it on the day so others can take your place.

ALSO: we hope you can join us at the MALAAMI FUTURES COMMUNITY WORKSHOP the next morning (SUNDAY 26 MARCH) for an interactive visioning and future building workshop. Register HERE: https://events.humanitix.com/m...

This event is proudly funded by the NSW Government, and supported by Bellingen Shire Council and Muurrbay Aboriginal Language and Culture Cooperative.
