About Bridget Pahl and Vanessa Narbey

Bridget Pahl, a painter recently relocated to Timaru, holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Canterbury and a postgraduate diploma in secondary art teaching from the University of Auckland. Her artistic practice is fundamentally concerned with the environments we inhabit, the figures that occupy these spaces, and the stories they tell, as well as connections and patterns formed across time. Current work reflects an interest in introduced plant and tree specimens to public parks and gardens, and the subsequent memories and attachments formed by those who visit them. An examination of the shifting interplay of light and form within the natural world is the visual intention behind these pieces, reflected in the layering of paint upon the surface.

Vanessa Narbey, artist and art educator, lives in Auckland with her family and holds a MFA from Elam School of Fine Arts.  A finalist in major art awards, she has exhibited her work globally and has works held in both private and public collections worldwide. Vanessa explores colour and visual perception in her paintings with the layering of shapes, textures and lines. Her work often starts with a fascination of packaging shapes and she often uses them as stencils in her paintings. A contemplative quality emerges in her work and creates ambiguity and intrigue. Vanessa is also an art educator in the community with over 25 years experience with teaching both Secondary and Tertiary students and she teaches Meditative Art workshops in community spaces, where participants discover techniques to enhance focus, foster relaxation, and cultivate a state of flow during their drawing sessions. This practice holds therapeutic potential, aiding in the navigation of creative obstacles. Utilizing an array of natural plant dyes, attendees explore the creation of fluid lines, marks, textures, and patterns.
