What's proposed
- A 140 m terminal for four ferries in the heart of Matilda Bay
- Two ferries consistently berthed during the day
- A two-storey building for high voltage charging built on the middle car park
- 39+ trees to be cleared
- Native sea grass and wildlife habitat cleared
- Speed exemptions three times the current speed limit in vulnerable areas
We are asking the Government:
Pause and Review
Safety and inclusive access. Independent review by risk expert Paul Chivers identifies repeated interactions between ferries and vulnerable water users at Central Matilda Bay. It favours Nedlands Jetty at JoJo’s as a location where the risk exposure is considerably lower and physical separation and operational controls could reduce risk.
Sport and community use. Rowing, disability and sailing representatives warn that ferry movements, wake and terminal infrastructure at Matilda Bay will restrict safe training and recreation. Schools, volunteer clubs, carers and families need a clear explanation of how existing activities will be protected in practice.
Environment and foreshore. Analysis of the ferry operations application raises concerns about extensive speed exemptions, wake, shoreline erosion and Pelican Point migratory bird habitat. The EPA assessment did not include final vessel, route or speeds, with the EPA only able to assess short term construction impacts.
Operations and value for money. The proposed timetable needs to be reconciled with safe speeds, charging, boarding and other river activity.
We are calling for the evidence to be made public
With the State Government expected to approve construction contracts in the coming weeks, our ask is urgent, timely, and important. We need your help in advocating for the community and demanding a pause on contract execution until the safety and environmental concerns based on actual ferry operations are addressed.
Why JoJo's ticks the boxes
- JoJo's is the safer site: Matilda Bay poses serious risk to on-water users.
- Separation from seagrass and water-based recreation, including windsurfers & kitesurfers
- Deeper water creates less environmental impact
- Existing jetty infrastructure and seawall
- Saves 39 trees and 105 car bays at Matilda Bay
- Saves disability sailing and children's training on the Bay
- Public transport direct to a growing high-density and hospitality precinct, plus easy connectivity to UWA & QEII
JoJo's is a ready-made solution that makes sense environmentally, financially, and for the community.
