Event description

Join us at Gurndandulup / Matilda Bay on the first full moon of Kambarang for Ni! Bilyada Waanginy Listen! The Rivers are Speaking and Meeka Moorart Full Moon Ceremony on October 20, 2021.

This is an Aboriginal-led cultural event featuring original song and dance celebrating the moon. It also forms part of our signature project Ni! Bilyada Waanginy Listen! The Rivers are Speaking which involves caring for and healing our waterways.

In 2019, in the season of Makuru, the Danjoo Koorliny Walking Together Social Impact Festival participants visited Gurndandulup to watch the full moon rise, and to begin learning a moon song.

Last year we returned to Gurndandulup at the beginning of the season of Djilba and watched the moon rise through the only gap in the clouds on the eastern horizon. We also sang the first ‘draft’ of the new Meeka Moorart Full Moon song, recorded with Noongar singers including Noel Nannup, Richard Walley, Farley Garlett, Carol Innes, Della Rae Morrison, Ezra Jacobs-Smith, Elisha Jacobs-Smith and Kobi Morrison, along with John Butler, Iain Grandage, Zal Kanga-Parabia and others, and mixed in his studio by Kav Temperley (Eskimo Joe). (Listen to the draft moon song here.) Last year Karen Hethey and Zoe Street also worked with other artists on a COVID-sized puppetry performance featuring boodalung the pelican.

This year will feature more dance, while some new puppets will join us on the journey towards 2029.

We will meet at and around Bayside Kitchen cafe, which will be open exclusively for us (they will be selling food and drink on the evening). You are also free to bring a picnic and a rug or chairs and sit on the grass outside the cafe. We will work towards having fires again in the evening.

We can begin gathering at 5pm. The moon will rise at 6:15pm, and we will wrap up some time around 7pm.

In the days leading up to the full moon, we invite you to:
- Listen to Moondang-ak Kaaradjiny / The Carers of Everything (duration 43 mins), password: DanjooKoorliny
- Listen to the draft full moon song
- Check out the full moon photo album from last year.

We hope to see you there!

This event forms part of the Danjoo Koorliny Walking Together project - an initiative designed and led by Aboriginal leaders to help us all walk together as Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people towards 2029 (200 years of colonisation in Perth) and beyond. The leaders of Danjoo Koorliny Walking Together are Dr Noel Nannup OAM, Dr Richard Walley OAM, Professor Emeritus Colleen Hayward AM and Carol Innes, working in partnership with numerous other Elders, Elders groups and other organisations.

All relevant COVID measures will apply. This is an alcohol free event.
