Murga Madre Latin Carnival - A Celebration of Street Culture
After three years of success, Murga Madre Latin Carnival returns bigger, brighter and more colourful than ever on Sunday 22 March at Open Factory in Reservoir, Naarm/Melbourne. This free-entry, family-friendly event is a vibrant celebration of the sounds, flavours and joy of Latin Carnival.
The festivities begin with the atmospheric Andean sounds of Sonido Madre South American Folk Music supported by ethno-dancer Jael Velasco. We move on to participatory activities with hands-on carnival prop decoration and dance workshops for all ages by Chiquitines Cultural Workshop.
Murga Madre will then ignite the street with a parade of contagious rhythms — and everyone is invited to join in! — before a high-energy murga show led by special guest Maestro Salvatore Rossano.
Feast on Argentinian street food from Señor BBQ Argentinean Charcoal Grill, indulge in sweet treats and gelato from Dulce, dance to DJ Tabone, and finish the night shaking the dancefloor to our favourite band The New Monos, playing their hip-hop, folklore and tango inspired originals.
Free, playful and packed with colour — Murga Madre Latin Carnival is a celebration of Latin street culture for the whole family.
Join the carnival fun!

Lineup

Murga Madre
Murga Madre is an artist collective bringing the magic and spirit of Latin Carnival from Buenos Aires to Australia, adding its own original spin. Rooted in the Argentinean carnival tradition, it blends European, African and Latin influences with the unique rhythm of the drumming bombo, through colour, passion, song and dance.

Salvatore Rossano
Accomplished musician and musicologist, Salvatore Rossano is a long-time lover of murga, and the founding Director of Murga Madre and murgas in Italy and New South Wales, where he now lives. His passion for the rhythm and history of murga, took him to undertake a PhD on this musical tradition, conducting most of his research in Argentina, where he learnt to play the contagious murga beats on the streets of Buenos Aires. We are delighted to have Salva as a special guest to play his carnival magic with Murga Madre!

The New Monos
With their roots in Buenos Aires, Argentina, seven-piece Melbourne-based band The New Monos combine inspiration from their South American heritage and diverse musical experience with the flavour of contemporary Buenos Aires, mixing reggae, folklore, cumbia, rock, rumba, hip-hop and Latin beats, all expressed with the passion of the tango.

Sonido Madre Trio (featuring Monica Santos)
Born in Jujuy, Argentina, Monica Santos is a song writer and interpreter who strongly advocates the musicality of sacred rituals and festivities of the people in the Andean region from South America. She will share a performance using musical instruments that are unique in South American folklore.

Chiquitines Cultural Workshop Inc
Chiquitines is a non-profit organisation whose aim is to provide an enriching experience of the Spanish language and cultures for children of all ages and their families. We strive to give strong community support for people who wish to maintain and pass on their Latin American and Spanish cultural heritages to their children, as well as sharing these with the wider Victorian community. Through fun activities, play, music, dance and interaction with members who speak Spanish, children are immersed in a rich environment, which supports their language learning and leads to a journey of cultural discovery.
