Nature Nights - Fascinating Fungi

Have you noticed mushrooms appearing around? 🍄

As we move into the wetter season, conditions are perfect for fungi to thrive. While mushrooms are often associated with being expensive, foraged or psychedelic properties, they play a vital and often overlooked role in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

Join us at the Port Environment Centre for an evening of creativity, community conversation and hands-on learning as we explore the fascinating world of fungi.

Here’s what’s happening:

4:00 – 5:00 pm | Make Mushroom Sculptures
Start the evening with a creative session led by Kristen Messenger from Bugs n Slugs. Create your own cement mushroom sculptures to take home and add a whimsical touch to your garden. All materials are provided.

5:00 – 6:00 pm | Community Eco Discussion
Join a relaxed community conversation exploring perceptions of mushrooms and fungi. Together, we’ll unpack common myths guided by two short articles.

Article 1: Fungi are among the planet’s most important organisms — yet they’re overlooked in conservation strategies

Article 2: The conservation crisis facing Australia’s fungi

6:00 – 7:30 pm | Fungi Fundamentals workshop
Interact directly with experts Jess (Wild Webcap & Fungi for Function) and Sophie Green (Fungi for Function / Fungimap) sharing about South Australia’s fungal diversity and will introduce you to the Fungi for Function citizen science project.

While foraging is a popular topic, this session focuses on science, conservation and the importance of fungi in our environment. Questions about edibility are welcome, though research on native Australian fungi is still limited. Learn where to look for resources if you are interested in foraging mushrooms.
