Justin DeHart presents newly commissioned NZ works for solo percussion. Come celebrate the premiere of James Gardner’s epic drumset solo, Traps, that Justin recently recorded for NZ Percussion Music Volume 2 album, due out later this year on Rattle Records. Some other highlights include: Infinite Mind by John Psathas is a two-movement piece for marimba and electronics that features excerpts from a recent interview of Noam Chomsky talking about current events and reflecting on his own life. Phil Brownlee’s Catchpool valley, early autumn places the vibraphone in “conversation” with the natural environment.
From Sacramento, California, Justin DeHart is a GRAMMY-nominated performer of contemporary musical styles from classical to pop, and from world to electronic. He was a member of Los Angeles Percussion Quartet and his musical resume includes performances with the NZ Symphony Orchestra, LA Phil New Music Group, I.C.E., red fish blue fish, and pop legends Stewart Copeland and Cheap Trick. Justin was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for percussion studies in India and he appears on over 100 solo, chamber and contemporary releases on MCA, Sony, Mode, Innova, Sono Luminus, Albany, New World, HatHut, Rattle, Populist, Bridge, Sub Pop, and Skunk Records. He holds a B.M. degree from CSU Sacramento, a M.F.A. from the Cal Arts, and a D.M.A. from UC San Diego. An Associate Professor of Music at the University of Canterbury, in Christchurch, New Zealand, Justin is a YAMAHA Performing Artist and an endorser of Black Swamp Percussion, REMO, Sabian, and Innovative Percussion Inc.
