Event description

Come for a walk around the Lakes and its history.

Newport Lakes was saved in 1984 by two women who saw a vision of what it could be. It had been a quarry since 1868 and was earmarked to become a tip. It was influenced by a vision from Butchart Gardens, Canada in 1978. The 120-minute guided walk will take past 8 points of interest with photos and stories of what was there before. Starting from pre-colonial days to today. Firstly, paying respect to the Yalukit-willam who took care of this land for millennia; then through the early colonial times and those who took from the land with stories of convicts, shootings and murders; finally, to today and the new people caring for this place. While walking we will weave through relevant theories of the need for nature in people’s lives, placemaking and regenerative development.
