This class is presented in conjunction with Eno Arts Mill's September gallery show featuring Triangle Book Arts.

About the class:

For those who love paper and journal making, but dislike sewing, you can learn to make several different styles of journals using alternate methods for creating your "signatures." Signatures are the folded papers that go into a book or journal. Traditionally there are many beautiful ways to hand-stitch the pages of the signatures together, and to then bind them inside a cover. In this workshop, instead of sewing with waxed thread, we will explore the use of twine, ribbon, butterfly brads and rubber bands to bind our journals. Our covers will be recycled books supplied by the instructor. Papers for signatures will be supplied but students are encouraged to bring in their own favorite papers, that can be folded to approximately 5x7 inches. Examples are wrapping papers, calendars, paper bags, hand-painted or decorated papers, vintage magazines, scrapbooking papers, maps, brochures, old letters, or plain lined or copy paper for writing and embellishing later. The number of finished journals we make will depend on the book covers and the amount of paper signatures that can be bound into those covers.

No prior experience necessary; supplies provided.

About the Artist: Jillian Goldberg

Jillian Goldberg is an abstract, contemporary mixed media artist. Her first love is working in acrylics on large canvases, but she also enjoys exploring collage and watercolors on paper and wood panel. Her work reflects her love of bold architectural shapes inspired by travels in Europe and the Middle East. Strong, clear saturated color choices suggest the sunlight of her coastal childhood in South Africa. Jillian attended the Michaelis School of Art at the University of Cape Town, graduating with a teaching degree in studio art. After immigrating to the USA with her family in 1982, she taught art at all levels for over thirty years in Charlotte and in the Triangle, North Carolina.

Jillian is a member of Triangle Book Arts.
