Noongar Summit

Event description

As we danjoo koorliny move forward together it’s important that we have opportunities for our Noongar community to come together, talk, connect, reflect and take action.

The focus of these days will be on community cohesion, cultural knowledge sharing (performance, stories, language), inspiring cultural strength, building a network of support for each other, engagement towards 2029 and other topics that come up.

The project leaders of Danjoo Koorliny Walking Together, Dr Noel Nannup OAM, Dr Richard Walley OAM, Professor Emeritus Colleen Hayward AM and Carol Innes, would like to invite you to this summit. They will be hosting these days with the support of many others.

They have been working together with numerous other Elders groups including Telethon Kids Institute - Ngulluk Koolunga Ngulluk Koort Elders, the City of Perth Elders, WAALI Elders and other Elders and leaders, including a team of more than 10 Noongar people that includes Farley Garlett, Daniel Morrison, Elisha Jacobs-Smith, Ezra Jacobs-Smith, Louise O’Reilly, Nicole Crnko, Shaye Hayden, Sharon Wood-Kenney, Jason Barrow, Narelle Thorne, Kobi Morrison and others. There are also project leads including Oral McGuire, Gordon Cole, Glenda Kickett and Dr Robyn Smith-Walley.

This larger group has also been supported by many individuals and organisations who align towards a vision for 2029 and beyond. Last year they hosted - with support from CSI UWA - the inaugural Danjoo Koorliny Walking Together Social Impact Festival. In 2020 they have hosted and presented in numerous events locally, nationally and internationally. Before continuing into 2021 it feels important to come together for this Noongar Summit.

Please note that this is a Noongar-only event. Other events during the year will be for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people of colour, sector-focussed, and others where everyone is welcome. The purpose of these specific events is not to be exclusive but so that different groups can strengthen within the Danjoo Koorliny movement, so that in turn we can be more inclusive and stronger together.

The program of these days is still in development.

The Danjoo Koorliny Social Impact Festival is an annual key event that brings us together to see what has shifted in the last year and ensure it sets our focus for the year(s) ahead.

All social distancing measures apply.
