Description

Raku & Obvara Workshop

Join us at Old Stables Pottery & Gallery for an exciting hands-on day exploring two fascinating ceramic firing techniques — Raku and Obvara.

Suitable for beginners and experienced potters alike, this workshop is all about experimentation, fire and embracing the unexpected. Discover the dramatic process of Raku firing, where glowing-hot pottery is removed from the kiln and rapidly cooled to create unique colours, textures and atmospheric surfaces.

You’ll also experience Obvara, an old Eastern European firing technique learned in Belarus in 2009. Hot ceramic is plunged into a fermented flour, yeast and sugar mixture before being immediately cooled in water, creating organic, earthy and unpredictable patterns.

Guided throughout the day, you’ll learn about the firing process, surface preparation and techniques while experiencing the excitement of working with a live Raku kiln.

Come and play with fire, fermentation and chance — and discover the magic of Raku and Obvara.
