About this Event

Workplace mental health and mental health in general is recognised as an increasingly important factor for any leader of people to consider seriously. Many of the leading companies have made efforts and allocated resources and education to assist the mental well being of their employees. It has been estimated that 20% of Australians will at one time experience a common mental illness. Those impacted may need to be absent to deal with this for themselves or their family. Equally , they may be at work but also absent in that they are affected such that their minds are not really on the job at the time. The stress may impact them such they are not able to fully focus and do their best work.  In this SIRF workshop , we are aiming to bring people from different organisations together to discuss and share what they are doing in this very important area.

We will discuss :

  • What Leaders can do
  • Resources and Training
  • Policies and Practices to assist Mental Health
  • Organisation Structures to support Mental Health

We will also have a presentation from Jetha Devapura, founder CEO of Let'sTALK and Vice President of the board at Lifeline International, who will share some of his experiences deploying the Let'sTALK at work as a program to encourage staff to talk about their concerns before they escalate to bigger issues including mental illness and even suicide. It's a preventative approach that involves the whole workplace to create an environment of psychological safety so everyone can feel included, safe to learn, contribute and challenge the status quo. Let'sTALK Mentors and Buddies are trained to build a village of support around the person who is struggling and who may not be comfortable expressing their thoughts and feelings. While companies may have an Employee Assistance Program that provides an important service. Jetha will address means to overcome the fact that many staff are still reluctant to reach out to Employee Assistance Program services potentially due to the stigma surrounding mental health and the fear of being found out. Jetha will outline how Let'sTALK empowers leaders as well as staff to have the confidence to talk to someone with compassion and care during their time of distress. When people feel good about themselves and feel safe to express their thoughts, then all those outcomes such as innovation and continuous improvement we sometimes feel people resist, simply flow. The Let'sTALK Program is validated by psychologists and evaluated by Melbourne University.
