Event description

Please join us for the launch of the Older Women’s Recipes for Respect, Victoria – a resource recognising the gendered nature of ageing and promoting respect and equality for older women. The resource was produced from a Biscuit Tin workshop, hosted by Elder Rights Australia and facilitated by Celebrate Ageing Ltd, for 14 older women from across Victoria.

This is an International Women's Day call to action on equality for older women.

Listen to the contributions and achievements of older women and the valued ways respect is shown in their families, communities and workplaces.

Learn about the importance of a Gender Lens for Elder Abuse prevention and a LifeStages approach for Family Violence and Women’s Services – and grab a copy of the resources.

Meet the older women who participated, share afternoon tea and join our call to action.

Why this matters: Addressing the impact of gender inequality and ageism on older women

A lifetime of gender inequality for older women is overlaid with a particularly caustic form of ageist disrespect, abuse, violence and silencing – which contributes to the following issues:

  • 34% of single older women live in poverty
  • 60% of older women leave paid work with no super
  • 61% of older women rely entirely on old age pension
  • 23% of older women have experienced physical or intimate partner violence
  • 7,300 older women are currently homeless –an increase of 40%
  • 400,000+ women (aged 54+) are currently at risk of homelessness
  • 28 older women died in family violence homicides in 2023
  • 40+ sexual assaults reported weekly in aged care (mostly women)
  • 365,000 older women reported experiencing elder abuse in 2023
