Inner West for Refugees - in collaboration with Fern Events and the City of Sydney - invite you to a morning of conversation and food – for our event - ONE STEP – Advocacy and Allyship in Action.
On March the 19th from 10-12.30pm at Seed Spaces Glebe, we invite you to come along and hear from three organisations working to support refugees and asylum seekers in our community which creates a more welcoming Sydney. Tickets include brunch style catering from Parliament on King – social enterprise catering made with love by an asylum seeker and refugee team.
Tickets are $25 with proceeds going to support our community, and a portion of the tickets are available at a subsidised rate for those who need them.
We present you an opportunity for people who would like to support refugee causes to come together and learn about a range of organisations and opportunities available. We want you to walk away equipped to support human rights in Australia, in ways that work for you as an individual. We want to inspire cohesion through connection.
Our expert facilitator, Suzanne Waldron, will take us through an interview style conversation with each organisation, to really delve into ways each of us can make an impact in our own daily lives, in progressing human rights.

You will come away with a range of options that suit you to be an ally in this space (attending the event is one of these!) and with a full heart and head to know - we can and will do better!

Who:
The Social Outfit is supporting Refugee Women to thrive through employment. The Social Outfit is a fashion label with a difference. They provide employment and training to people from refugee and new migrant communities in clothing production, retail, design and marketing. Their social business model builds skills in a supportive environment, interacting with broader Sydney communities and producing ethical fashion that reflects a hopeful Australian spirit. The ASC is an organisation with a vision for an Australia that opens its heart to people seeking asylum, affirming their basic human rights to freedom from persecution, violence and fear. The ASC -
Connect people to support and services including accommodation, financial relief, health care, employment assistance, education, food, material aid and recreational activities.
Engage the community by including opportunities for people to provide practical support as well as to advocate for political change and influence policy and legal change by drawing on the direct daily experience of people seeking asylum to develop and promote campaigns to improve public laws and policies and working with other services to bring about needed change.
Mums 4 Refugees is a network of women working with and for people seeking asylum and refugees. They seek the involvement and support of mothers from all cultural, social and political spectrums who want to see a compassionate and inclusive approach taken towards people who arrive as asylum seekers and refugees; sharing and promoting the views of organisations and individuals who seek to humanise the discourse around Asylum Seekers;
and providing practical assistance to asylum seekers through detention centre visits, conducting donation drives to collect and distribute material aid and by engaging in community-building activities.
Addison Road Community Organisation
Addi Road is a small charity with a huge impact. They work with the community to make the world more fair and sustainable. They rescue food, fight hunger, lead the grassroots #RacismNotWelcome campaign with their Ambassador, Craig Foster and stand in solidarity with diverse communities in times of need. Every week Addison Road Community Organisation diverts over 8 tonnes of food from going to landfill and provide food to more than 8,000 people. They rely on hundreds of committed volunteers and generous donors to make this possible.
Suzanne Waldron was born in England, and lives in Sydney, Australia. She is fascinated with humanity and how we relate to ourselves and one another. Born deaf, she had multiple operations to restore her hearing. She lived in a truck travelling Europe before becoming a foster child, then homeless teenager. She experienced a tough upbringing. This led her to dig deeply into life’s array of emotions and how we can each utilise all that living has to offer. Her first book A Flourishing Mind takes the reader through her life experiences and learnings via harsh realities, to a place of deep hope.
Believing that honest, hopeful and truthful relationships are the bedrock of fulfilment and progress, Suzanne works with individuals, organisations and influencers to build cohesive relationships in community, government and not for profits. She works globally combining her skills as a behavioural change facilitator, artist, writer and speaker.
Suzanne is a creative director for the Museum of Freedom of Tolerance and former curator for TEDxPerth. She is an active ambassador for R U OK? and Nakuru Hope. She was nominated for Western Australian of the Year 2016 for her work in the community.
