Open Architecture Talk OFFICE | Another way to practice.

The School of Architecture and Built Environment at the University of Newcastle is delighted to be hosting OFFICE through our Open Architecture Talk series. These talks are free and open for students, practitioners, and the broader community to come together and ‘open up’ our shared places, practices and projects. This public programming is part of our Visiting Architects and Experts project, that draws in a diversity of voices and perspectives to discuss, workshop and critique the built environment.

Talk Title| OFFICE - Another way to practice

As Australia’s only charitable architectural practice, OFFICE will present their formation, operational model, and diverse portfolio of projects. Ranging from built work to publications and a dedicated public event space, this lecture will explore a breadth of practice that foregrounds design for the public good. This alternative mode of practice interrogates our relationship to the built environment as architects and landscape architects; how might we work within the limits of our profession to develop ethical projects that hold social, cultural and environmental integrity?

Bio| OFFICE

OFFICE is a Melbourne-based, not-for-profit multidisciplinary design and research practice operating at the intersection of built form, research, discourse, and education. As Australia’s only charitable architectural practice, their operations and outputs are bound by a constitution dedicated strictly to the public good.

Their most recent work includes the delivery of the culturally and climate-appropriate remote housing with Wilya Janta, advocating for the retention of public housing in Victoria and NSW, the release of the publication Aqua Nullius, and the operation of 3553—a public event space dedicated to exploring ideas that shape the built environment.
