Orizome Paper Dyeing
Event description
Orizome roughly means "folded dyeing" in Japanese. Sometimes called Orizomegami ("folded dyeing paper"), this technique results in striking geometric patterns. It's a fairly accessible way for anyone to dye papers for mixed media work, decoupage, gift wrapping, making cards, or just showing off in a frame. This is a beginner-friendly activity and a colorful way to start making art.
After learning the basic technique, we'll practice dyeing using acrylic inks, watercolor inks, and even the humble food coloring! We'll discuss the characteristics of each medium, as well as why you might choose one over the other. And then we'll mix it up by trying a few different types of paper. There will be ample time for participants to experiment and play.
All materials are included, but you are welcome to bring your favorite food coloring/dye colors and papers to experiment with.
Please note that this can be a messy activity. At the very least, you may end up with dyed fingers. We recommend dressing appropriately. Feel free to bring gloves and/or an apron.
This class is open to participants ages 16+. ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST HAVE A WAIVER ON FILE. We will have hard copies available on site. Please also refer to our parking and accessibility information.
