Making a traditional Japanese Joint only Used in Osaka Castle, Otemon -gate, Hikae-bashira.

This program includes a lot of Japanese saw and chisel experience.

Well suited to those looking to improve their hand skills.

Well suited for intermediate level and those interested in Japanese joinery.

We will also present examples of other Japanese traditional joinery used in traditional carpentry in Japan.

What is Osaka-Jo Tsugi?

How can you do this? This was once a long time mistery that no one knew how it was made until...

There are interesting story behind this specia joint.

Osaka Jo translates to Osaka Castle, and Tsugi means Joint, especially joint in length.

The Joint was developed during the original construction of Osaka Castle, Otemon Gate in 1583-1597.

It is used specifically in Osaka Castle’s Otemon Gate at the bottom of the large gate pillars to allow for repairs to take place with out dismantling the whole structure.

OsakaJo Tsugi is found not where else in Japan.

Lecturer

Clare Solomon (KOITOYA Design/Make/Teach)

Full time furniture maker at Koitoya. 

Graduated from ANU School of Art, Furniture. Clare has been an active artist exhibiting their own work.

Clare has been working full-time with Hiroshi since 2016.

Clare returned from a Japan trip in 2023, where they stayed with Japanese woodworkers for further training.

Parking

Please park your car in the public parking area along Maryborough Street (Free), opposite from J Racing.

We have two parking spots officially. Please contact me for a spot if you need to walk less for a health condition.

Way to the workshop

18 Maryborough Street is a battle-axe block, located inside of the block, so you will be walking down a long driveway that leads to us from Maryborough Street.

The driveway has 2 access points, one next to Aqua Safe Water Filters, and one next to J Racing.

Unit 4 is a blue colourbond building on the right-hand side of the block (SE end).

Things to bring

Please wear working shoes.

Bring your own water bottle and lunch.
