Event description

What this is

This is a community workshop, focusing on applying theatre practices to our lived experiences of othering, how it affects ourselves and those around us.

The workshop will be broken into two parts, the first being focused on exploring techniques   (21st-22nd of Nov) whilst the second focuses on applying the techniques learnt through play creation (24th-26th of Nov). People seeking to be involved with play creation must fully attend both workshops.

There will be an honorarium provided for any individuals completing both workshops, though places are limited, so please make sure you send an expression of interest.

This workshop isn't for people just interested in learning Theatre of the Oppressed method. If interested in more theory-focused workshops, reach out to Thirdway Theatre.

Why is this important

We all carry stories of belonging and exclusion. In this workshop, we'll look at both sides:

  • moments when we've been seen as "the other," reduced to a label or assumption; and

  • moments when we've seen or treated others through those same filters.

Together, we'll create with our real experiences of othering and use theatre to open collective dialogue: How does othering play out between us? What keeps it alive? What might change if we acted differently?

Facilitators: Hector Aristizábal (Re-Conectando Colombia) & Xris Reardon (Third Way Theatre, Hobart & Vic)
When: Five days, 21st to 22nd and 24th to 26th of November, 6-7 hours daily

Where: TBC, Accessible venue,

What actually happens: We use theatre games and movement - not to perform, but as ways to explore and connect with people with disabilities, Aboriginal people, LGBTQIA+ people, people from different class backgrounds, and all people who experience othering - and people we other, including those we justify as being the problem. Everything adapts to how your body works. Mostly, we're creating space to be with what's really happening - personally and collectively - while honouring our connection to the more-than-human world to sustain us in this work.

If you're hesitant:

That makes complete sense. You don't need to know anything about theatre. The uncertainty you might be feeling about whether this is "for you" is actually part of what we explore together.

The people who come usually find others who are also willing to sit with the big questions of our time - and there's something deeply relieving about not being alone with all of this.

Take care of yourself:

We have a support person available as a referral point during the process, not because we think people are made of glass, but because we're clear we're inviting you into a robust conversation.

Practical details:

Three days in Tasmania (must live in Tasmania and be connected to the community or land here). Aboriginal community members are free to attend.

  • Must commit to all days of the workshop

  • We welcome you to bring food to share, as this would be ideal, but it is NOT compulsory.

  • Any mobility issues: you don't have to push yourself, you know your limits better than we do

  • Please anticipate a full-day commitment 9:30-4:30 approximately, for the workshop.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out to us by email at thirdwaytheatre@gmail.com or call/text at  04 2829 3008 (please leave name and number).

This event is supported by Clarence City Council, PLot Theatre, YARC (CoH), TUSA, and Thirdway Theatre.
