Pōwhiri - Explained & Experienced!
Event description
Experience a Pōwhiri (traditional Māori welcome) at our local marae. But before you get there, find out what to expect and get your questions answered around what to do, what it all means and why things are done the way they are.
Michelle Brett (Ngati Ranginui, Ngati Maniapoto) will lead this Cultural Competency Workshop which starts at 10am at Community House and concludes at Hakatere Marae with a pōwhiri including lunch, and follow up activities. Michelle Brett is the Pou Takawaenga / Maori Liaison Officer for Hato Hone, St John. She is also the Kaiwhakahaere/ Chairperson at Hakatere Marae.
This event is open to anyone and particularly suited if any of these apply; you
- live in Mid Canterbury and have not been to Hakatere Marae yet
- would like to have a deeper knowledge of pōwhiri processes
- are new to New Zealand and want to learn more about Māori culture
- want to feel comfortable participating in pōwhiri for work or in other contexts
- want to develop your knowledge of te ao Māori
- would like to experience spending time at a marae
- have questions about pōwhiri/ visiting a marae and want a safe place to ask them
- need to attend Māori cultural competency training for work (we can email a certificate of participation)
All cultures welcome!
Registrations close December 6th at 6pm, or before if sold out. Please register today to avoid disappointment! A simple lunch is included in this workshop and an email will be sent to those registered on or before the 6/12 asking about your dietary requirements, so we can cater for you.
