Event description

Please join us in the spirit of community and sharing, as we explore the art of Tatreez.

This coming together is in honour of the Palestinian people, their heritage and their fight for freedom.

This workshop will be lead by Mariam Chanaoui, a multi-discplinary artist working on Gundungurra and Dharawal country. I delve into my Palestinian heritage during highschool and discovered Tatreez. At the time I found that I needed to be as much my own teacher and researcher. Fast forward, I furthered my education in a Bachelor of Creative Arts and now regularly deliver workshops in this ancient art.

The practice of Tatreez (Palestinian embroidery) originated in Palestine over 3,000 years ago. It is a unique form of embroidery that brings together coloured threads in various patterns to create traditional motifs. Motifs were area-specific, as well as symbolic of important events and everyday life such as a wedding or pregnancy, features of nature and more recently of freedom.

The afternoon will include

  • A range of different designs and colours for different meanings and regions.
