Passover, Delayed: A Torah Story About Second Chances

What happens when life gets in the way of showing up for something important? In the book of Bamidbar (Numbers), a small group of people miss the chance to celebrate Passover—and instead of being dismissed, they’re given something remarkable: a second opportunity, one month later, known as Pesach Sheni (Second Passover).

This class explores that moment and what it means. Why would the Torah make space for a “do-over”? Who qualifies for it? And what does it say about how tradition holds space for human limitations?

We’ll study the original text of this story, guided by classical commentators and modern thinkers alike. No prior experience with Torah study is necessary—just curiosity and a willingness to dive in. Together, we’ll unpack the historical, legal, and spiritual dimensions of this lesser-known holiday, and ask what it might teach us today about second chances, inclusion, and the possibility of renewal—even when it feels like we’ve missed our window.

Ellie Riesel joined the Boston community 6 years ago, after teaching Tanach at Berman Hebrew Academy in Silver Spring, MD. She has previously worked as a Tanach teacher and Director of Student Life at Maimonides School in Brookline, and now works alongside her husband Rabbi Yudi Riesel directing Boston NCSY, the teen youth group of the Orthodox Union. Ellie and her husband live in Newton with their 4 children.

Can I eat during class?
