Pints & Periods: A Practical Workshop for Dads
Description
What if her first period happens when she’s with you?
Would you know what she needs?
Would you know what to buy?
Would you know what to say without making the moment awkward?
Pints & Periods is a practical two-hour workshop designed specifically for dads, father figures and male caregivers of girls approaching puberty or in the early years of having periods.
There’s no expectation that you already know much about periods, that’s the point!
Over a pint and an easy conversation, we’ll cover the things dads actually need to know so you can feel prepared, answer questions with confidence and help make periods a normal part of family life rather than something awkward or embarrassing.
You’ll leave knowing more about what is happening in her body, what a first period can look like, what products are available, what’s normal, when she might need extra support and what you can practically do to help.
And because knowing is only useful if you can put it into practice, you’ll also make your own take-home period-ready kit to keep ready for when it’s needed.
What we'll cover
What girls need to understand before their first period
The basics of puberty, periods and the menstrual cycle (explained simply)
What a first period might actually look like
What to say when she asks questions or tells you her period has started
What to buy; pads, period underwear and the other options available
How to help her choose products that feel right for her
What is generally considered normal in the early years of periods
Signs that may warrant a conversation with a health professional
What to keep at Dad's house, in the car or when travelling
How to talk about periods without embarrassment or making it a big deal
How dads can help girls feel supported, capable and confident in their changing bodies
You'll make a Period-Ready Kit
During the workshop, you'll put together a simple practical period kit to take home.
It will include period products and essentials so you have something ready if a first period or an unexpected period that happens while she's with you.
You'll also get practical resources you can refer back to after the workshop.
Who is this workshop for?
Pints & Periods is for dads, stepdads, grandfathers, foster carers, father figures and other male caregivers supporting girls through puberty and periods.
It's particularly useful if the girl you support is around 8–13 years old, but you're very welcome if she's younger, older or has already started her period.
You don't need any prior knowledge.
And you definitely don't need to arrive knowing what the difference is between a liner, a regular pad and an overnight pad.
