About the concert

The pipa has carried stories for more than two thousand years. In Pipa Postcards: Sounds of Home, we hear it through the lens of today: an ancient voice reimagined in world premiere new works, fresh arrangements, improvisations and collaborations with piano and dizi.

Each piece is a musical postcard, a snapshot of memory, place and the feeling of home, wherever home is for you. Whether you grew up with these sounds or are hearing the pipa for the first time, this is an evening to sit close, listen deeply and feel the music in the room.

Featuring

Jinqi Guo, pipa. Jinqi Guo is a versatile pipa performer and educator based in Sydney. Trained at the prestigious Central Conservatory of Music in China and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, she has performed at major venues including Beijing's Great Hall of the People and Sydney Town Hall, as well as on international stages across Italy, Austria and Hungary. A Gold Medallist at the 2026 Dunhuang Cup (Australia/New Zealand), Jinqi is an active collaborator in intercultural music, committed to reimagining the pipa's ancient voice within contemporary musical landscapes.

About the presenters

Jin Sheng Music 金声国乐 is a Sydney-based Chinese traditional music organisation founded by pipa soloist and educator Jinqi Guo. Our name, 金声 (jīn shēng), means "golden sound": music that is refined, warm and moving to hear live.
