Native Plant Identification - Land for Wildlife Workshop 2025

About the event
Join Land for Wildlife coordinator, Anna Povey, for a day in the field learning how to identify our local native plants. This is also a great chance to meet other Land for Wildlife members.  We will spend some time indoors and some time walking on tracks a short distance through the bush.

This will be a field-based event focussed on:

• Features of plants to look for (flower parts, fruit, leaf arrangement, scents etc)

• Identifying features of common plant families (this helps you to narrow down your choices)

• Resources for identification (such as the app, iNaturalist, websites, good books, Flips etc)

• How to use a simple identification key

• Why scientific names are actually useful and help you to understand much more (and how to pronounce them)

Paton Park is set in 140 hectares of natural bushland on the Leven River. It is situated on the northwest coast of Tasmania near the township of North Motton.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW 
We will meet at the Paton Park Scout Camp at 9:15am for a 9:30am start

What's included: Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided.

Participants will need to be self-sufficient for a few hours in the field. Expect to be walking on undulating and sloping ground at times, optionally through long undergrowth and temperatures may be warm or cold on the day.  The event will occur whether or not there is rain.

Getting there: The Patron Park Scout Camp is a 17km drive from Ulverstone, taking approximately 20 minutes. You will be able to park at the facilities. 

Guests are asked to please bring:    

Lunch, snacks and water/drinks.

• Sensible bush clothes, covered shoes and hat. Be prepared for sun, rain or cold.

• Plant identification book(s) if you already have any (optional).

• Phone or camera with macro if you have one.

• Hand lens (loupe) or magnifying glass (optional)

• A bag or small backpack may be useful during the outside walk

• Folding chair/stool if necessary to be carried during walk.

It would be great if you could download the excellent free app, iNaturalist, before you come.  Get yourself logged in so it’s ready to go.  However, it’s fine if you want to wait till you’ve seen how it works at the workshop.

The spring weather, as we know, is unpredictable, so please come prepared.

Registration:
As always, places for the trip will be limited, so please register online as soon as you can. 

Revenue from ticket sales goes towards covering the cost of hosting TLC events. There is no need to bring your tickets on the day - we will have an attendee list. 

In the event of inclement weather, or a regional total fire ban the event will be postponed / cancelled and you will be notified via email on the evening of Friday 24th October. The TLC will refund tickets in full if the event is cancelled. Please note that the TLC can take no financial responsibility for attendees' pre-booked accommodation, in the event of a cancellation.

To help avoid the spread of root rot (Phytophthora cinnamomi) and environmental weeds, please make sure your footwear and vehicles are free from soil and debris where possible. We will have spray for your shoes available on the day.
