Play Reading : Sexcapades by Rosemary Cann
Event description
Poppy is in her first queer relationship. Tash is her girlfriend. Tash makes coffee, wears button downs and is generally the best feminist in any room she enters. Poppy is being introduced to Tash's two closest friends; Archie and Lilta. Poppy is out of her depth. They are playing a drinking game. The drinking game is called Sexcapades. Sexcapades explores the queer themes of belonging, gate-keeping, labelling, bi-phobia, hetero-phobia, gender roles, feminism, the power of language, masculinity and femininity.
This project was made possible by the Australian Government Regional Arts Fund, which supports the arts in regional and remote Australia.
Featuring four talented Tasmanian actors, this local work will have a reading at Kickstart Arts, following a showcase at the Midsumma Queer Playwriting Award Showcase in Melbourne. Rosemary Cann is an exciting emerging Hobart-based writer, and is thrilled to be bringing this work in development to a Hobart audience, thanks to support from the Regional Arts Fund. Rosemary holds an MA in Creative Writing for Stage and Screen and is a 2023 recipient of an Arts Tasmanian Artist Residency and the Salamanca Arts Centre EMERGENCE Program. SEXCAPADES, one of her earliest works, has been developed through Future Proofing the Page (Blue Cow and ATYP), the Blue House Tarraleah Artist Residency (Blue Cow and Performing Lines), and mentorship with renowned dramaturg Peter Matheson. This reading, as well as the Midsumma Queer Playwriting Award Showcase reading, have been supported financially through a Regional Arts Quick Response Grant, allowing Rosemary to work with this incredible cast and bring this work to both a Melbourne and Hobart audience! The Theatre Closet and KickstART Arts have provided generous in-kind support and endorsement, and Rosemary and the cast very much look forward to welcoming you to this reading, followed by an artist Q&A for any audience who wish to participate.
