Poetry and Form with Madeleine Dale

Struggling with sonnets? Problems with pantoums? Fixed form poems can seem intimidating – but they can also be fun and flexible. In this workshop, you will explore a number of poetic forms, gaining the skills and confidence to write in these styles while also learning how to subvert and play with formal expectations.

Learning outcomes

As part of this workshop, you will:

• Unpack a variety of poetic forms and their requirements

• Identify key formal techniques and learn how to use them in your poetry

• Explore how to experiment with form

• Use practical exercises to kick-start your poetry

Format

This is an in-person workshop with a focus on writing craft; it will be held at State Library of Queensland. This workshop is suitable for poets of all levels and backgrounds.

About Madeleine

Madeleine Dale is a poet and researcher based in Brisbane. She holds first-class honours and a Masters degree in Creative Writing from the University of Queensland. Her first full-length collection, Portraits of Drowning, won the Thomas Shapcott Prize, the Five Islands Poetry Prize, and was commended for the Wesley Michel Wright Prize.
