Portraiture is one of the oldest genres in the history of art used to communicate ideas about identity, social issues and the sitter’s place in the world.
In this illustrated talk, Melbourne University Lecturer in Art History Mimi Kelly traces the use of portraiture in contemporary Australian art with examples from the 1990s to the present and explores the questions ‘How to we see ourselves? What do portraits convey about our individual and collective identity?
