Sat, 14 Jun, 2pm - 4pm AEST

Event description

Join artist, curator, and PhD candidate Jeremy Smith for an engaging workshop on queer counter-mapping.

In this hands-on session, participants will learn how maps can be powerful tools for representing and reclaiming queer histories, identities, and spaces.

Through guided exercises, Jeremy will introduce the concept of counter-mapping, which involves creating alternative maps that challenge dominant narratives and highlight marginalised experiences.

The workshop will encourage reflection on the intersections of time, place, body, and mind, inviting participants to create their own personal counter-maps that reflect their unique queer experiences.

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how mapping can serve as a form of resistance and storytelling. They will also acquire practical skills to embark on their own counter-mapping journeys.

Whether you are an artist, activist, or simply a curious community member, this workshop will offer a space for self-expression, collaboration, and the exploration of new ways to represent the queer world.

Bio:

Jeremy Smith is an award-winning Sydney-based artist and curator whose work explores queer histories and identities through hand-drawn counter maps. As a PhD candidate in Fine Arts, Jeremy's research delves into the intersections of queer culture, art, and geography, with a particular focus on Sydney’s gay male community post-PrEP. Over the past decade, Jeremy has exhibited work that challenges mainstream narratives, uncovering hidden histories and empowering marginalised voices. He is also one of the initial curators at Qtopia Sydney, the city's first queer museum. His large-scale hand-drawn counter-maps blend personal narrative with community history and have been collected by the State Library of NSW, Maritime Museum and featured at Qtopia Sydney.
