Ragtag Procession by the Birrarung
Event description
Our procession will be bright with dress ups and move to the beat of small percussion instruments. As we wander we’ll build connections, observe and learn what’s happened in this area over time.
We’ll see the Monash Freeway in all its concrete, motor vehicle-carrying glory. We'll speak for the Birrarung, which had its course changed to make way.
We’ll go and we’ll return. Perhaps through our modest ceremony we'll break free of a few existing understandings and take on a few new ones that help us publicly celebrate our unique river.
For children there will be dress ups and baskets to carry for important findings.
This event is presented by City of Yarra with artist Annie Bolitho.
Please note: On the previous Saturday, 20th September between 11am and 1pm all are welcome to participate in preparing elements of the procession – making rag tag stuff with upcycled fabrics, ecodyes and techniques like smearing, tearing, and joining with knots and easy stitches. This will take place at the Pavilion at Richmond’s Burnley Park.
Accessibility: This event is NOT wheelchair friendly. Riverfest welcomes everyone—we’re committed to making our events accessible and inclusive for people of all abilities. If you have accessibility needs and require support to attend, please email carolyn.tate@yarrariver.org.au

Acknowledgement of Country
The Yarra Riverkeeper Association acknowledges that the lands and waterways of the Yarra, Birrarung catchment, are the unceded territories of the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung and Bunurong peoples. We pay respect to Traditional Owners, who have, and continue, to care for Country. We acknowledge that the river now called Yarra has always been known as the Birrarung by its custodians.
