Event description

Join Filipina woman Coleen Caday, Celtic-Gaelic woman Mollie Vaughan and Noongar and Tuwharetoa woman Kiri Tawhai in conversation as they take you on their personal journeys of re-membering through art and ancestry.

The search for cultural identity is always present, but through historical and recent processes of displacement, our connection to land and culture has been dismantled. Our individual experiences are unique, but it is our shared empathy that creates understanding through shared ancestral learning.  Through our personal journeys we have discovered the importance of relearning and remembering our ancestors as a crucial step in the establishment of reconnection between people, places and memories.

We invite you to gather with our ancestors to remember that a connection to oneself is a connection to us all.

This session is run in conjunction with ANG AMING PAGKAKAKILANLAN / THIS IS OUR IDENTITY

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Coleen Caday is a Filipina emerging artist who explores the notions of identity and representation within her practice. Born in San Juan, Metro Manila, Caday migrated to Australia at the age of 5. It is through Caday’s creative practice that she begins to unpack the significance of the people and places that she encounters in her life. Caday had graduated from Deakin University with a Bachelor of Arts in 2020 with a double major in Anthropology and Photography. She had then proceeded into her honours in Creative Arts in 2021 with a focus on decolonizing methodologies to preserve Filipino culture.

Kiri Tawhai is a proud Noongar and Tuwharetoa woman who grew up on Yaburara Country amongst the red dirt and the spinifex and the beautiful islands of the Dampier Archipelago. A mother of three, an Aunty, a sister, a daughter, a cousin and a niece. Kiri has had a lifelong love of art in all forms and graduated Deakin University with a Bachelor Degree in Visual Arts in 2018. She is an Artist, Curator, Collaborator and Mentor, who has had collaborative artwork exhibited in Tokyo, curated multiple exhibitions and held a solo show here in Geelong. A multimedia artist, Kiri is a storyteller with a passion for learning and sharing knowledge and respecting old ways of knowing and doing within a contemporary world.

Mollie Vaughan is a New Media artist who channels abstract forces of nature and interprets their imprinted patterns through data and technology. The last few years have seen her work converge at the intersection between art and science; the esoteric and the sensory perceptions of our reality. In what she dubs ‘relearning the universal language,’ Mollie is guided intuitively through scientific theorem to create abstract depictions that reflect our transcendental experiences in nature. Her predominant use of digital photography, cameraless processes and image manipulation mirror nature’s algorithms and situate her work within a state beyond the biological consciousness.
