Event description

Women’s Health East is pleased to host It’s all in the name: Recognising women in place, an online practice forum for local government and others interested in the topic.

Victoria has a rich history of incredible, diverse women who have helped shape this state. Despite this, women and gender diverse people are inadequately recognised and represented in place naming and public artwork. This reflects broader gender inequality, and addressing the gender gap in place naming is vital to creating welcoming, safe and inclusive societies.

This webinar will highlight the importance of recognising women and gender diverse people in place through commemorative place naming of public spaces including streets, buildings, parks and artworks. It will:

  • Consider the role of local government in addressing this issue
  • Present case studies from councils undertaking this work
  • Discuss practical strategies councils can adopt to increase gender equitable place naming.

We welcome Kerry Wilson from Put Her Name On It as a guest presenter and will hear from local councils undertaking place naming work.

About Kerry: Kerry Wilson is a gender equity and physical activity changemaker with significant local government and public sector experience transforming thinking, business and impact. As a co-founder of the Put Her Name on It Campaign and Advertising (in)equality project (shEqual) Australian firsts, Kerry has demonstrated experience in applying a lens and analysis, and developed and led transformative actions for meaningful change at a local, state and national level.
