Restorative Justice and Academic Integrity Half Day Workshop - September 2026

KPU’s approach to academic integrity encourages the use of restorative justice when responding to academic integrity breaches (AIBs). This engaging, hands-on half-day workshop, designed and facilitated by Dr. Alana Abramson, explores how restorative practices can transform the way we respond to harm and foster more inclusive learning environments. Participants will examine how restorative justice can be applied in the context of academic integrity and consider its role alongside other approaches. This workshop is ideal for faculty and staff who are interested in learning about restorative justice and applying this approach when addressing academic integrity breaches at KPU. 

Note: This interactive experiential workshop requires a minimum of 6 participants to run. If there are fewer participants, the session may shift to a more consultation style session. 

Facilitator:  Alana Abramson has been teaching in the Criminology department for KPU for the last 20 years and has been involved as a researcher, trainer and practitioner of restorative justice since 1999. Her doctoral work focused on restorative justice and post-secondary educational settings, and she is passionate about finding innovative, meaningful, and relational ways to enhance the lives of students and faculty.

Through engaging in this half-day workshop, you will have the opportunity to: 

1. Understand key principles and practices of restorative justice in relation to academic integrity breaches. 

2. Compare and contrast restorative, punitive, and educational approaches to responding to AIBs. 

3. Evaluate the benefits, challenges, and limitations of restorative justice approaches, including ways to address these. 

4. Develop practical strategies for engaging in restorative conversations with students.
