Rotary Melbourne Weekly Club Meeting - 30 July 2025

Guest Speaker Anna Schulze - Director Government Relations & Public Policy, CSL Limited

Topic 'Snakes Alive! How Australian antivenoms are saving lives abroad'

Details 12.30 for 12.50 - 2.00pm at No35 Sofitel Melbourne & by ZOOM

CSL began making antivenom for Australian snakes in the 1930’s.  It is the only manufacturer of Australian antivenom in the world and the last large pharmaceutical company still making antivenom.

Snakebite is a neglected tropical disease.  Every year around the world there are ~2+ million snakebite envenomations of which ~100 000 will die and many more will suffer permanent disabilities.  95% of these occur in the developing world.

Anna will speak to the public health challenges of snakebite, CSL’s role in capacity building in the region and the highly successful antivenom donation program in Papua New Guinea.

Anna is a public affairs professional who has worked for Cabinet Ministers at a federal and state level and in corporate public affairs in Australia, the United States and Papua New Guinea.  She has a particular interest in public health challenges in the developing world and is heavily involved in CSL’s support for capacity building, institutional strengthening and donation of antivenom in our region.   Anna holds a Masters’ Degree in Public Policy and Management, a Graduate Diploma in Population Studies and a Bachelor’s in Development Studies.
