Event description

The Renters Rights Rundown: Making sense of evictions

More than 130 changes to Victoria’s renting rules came into effect on 29 March 2021.  A number of the changes give renters more protections around evictions, including:

  • Allowing evictions only in a limited set of circumstances
  • Banning no-reason evictions after the first tenancy agreement
  • A new process for rent arrears evictions
  • A new test at VCAT that considers whether evictions are reasonable and proportionate in the circumstances.

We know Victorian renters are facing extremely tough conditions in the rental market. In this context, having knowledge to prevent evictions is a critical protection against homelessness.

VCOSS is holding an online sector briefing for workers wanting to learn about evictions or to refresh your memory on renters’ rights under the Residential Tenancies Act 1997.

VCOSS will be joined by Jemma Donaghey, Lawyer at Justice Connect Homeless Law and Angela Kyriakopoulos, Homelessness Advocate at Council to Homeless Persons, who will answer any questions you may have on renters’ rights and supporting clients to navigate the new system.

Questions can be submitted during the session or, if you already know what you'd like to ask, you can submit a question to the panel during registration.

This session is free and open to all, but designed for community sector workers who provide information, advice and assistance to renters.
