SA Company Reserve Port Adelaide – Its Development from 1840
Event description
The South Australia Company was responsible for establishing the ‘New Port’ on Gawler Reach of the Port River in 1840. In return for building the new access road, the Government granted the Company a plot of land which was known as the SA Company Reserve – the block bounded by the river, Commercial Rd, Divett and Lipson Streets. Here they built their original warehouses serving the new “McLaren Wharf”. Over the years the Company sold/leased portions of this land, and it gradually became part of the main financial & business centre of the Port (and SA’s 1st State Heritage Area).
The years have seen great change in the buildings on this block (by the presenters reckoning only 2 original buildings remain). The presenter, a member of PoANT and the Port Adelaide Historical Society, has conducted an exhaustive search of historic photos of the buildings and businesses on the SA Company block, and the presentation takes the form a “walk around” the block looking at these images. Special attention will be given to the presentation venue – originally built for the National Bank of Australasia in 1866.
The evening will conclude with an opportunity to tour the building and to enjoy a light supper and drink with fellow members. Places are limited to 20, so it is advisable to secure your ticket early.
