Event description

Sacred Drum Crafting Ceremony

Join us for an immersive and hands-on experience at the Sacred Drum Crafting Ceremony in Coorabell, Byron Shire, NSW, Australia, Saturday July 6 and Sunday July 7, 9.30am-5.00pm. (Note: this is not a residential, and full address will be provided on registration).

Everyone is welcome, this is a gender inclusive workshop, a shared space of masculine and feminine. Note however this is an intimate event with a maximum of 6 participants.

For the duration of the two day workshop you will be held in safe and sacred space, fully guided and supported in the process to intentionally and consciously create your own 15 inch frame drum and drum beater. No prior experience is necessary.

There are three interwoven aspects layered into the journey of consciously crafting your medicine drum:

  • Connecting to and deepening your understanding of yourself, your birth story and your creative process
  • Building a relationship to your drum through the animal and wood you are using and through the process of weaving the drum
  • Birthing yourself as a drummer

We will craft the drums with Kangaroo hide and Pine hoops. The materials are all sourced and prepared ethically honouring the spirit of the animal and tree with deep reverence and gratitude to live on through the drums.

What's included:

  • All materials for creating a 15" drum and a drum beater (excluding handle)
  • Nourishing vegetarian morning and afternoon tea each day
(If you have a desire for a specific drum size or animal hide you wish to work with, please get in touch and we can discuss).
Note: Workshop payment via Bank Transfer is also available. Please email zaana@camino.au

Why craft a drum?

Weaving your own medicine drum can be a profound and empowering experience, moving through the depths of surrender and coming into your own power. It provides us an opportunity to see in the moment some of your inner workings, and gain deeper self awareness and knowledge of our beliefs and patterns which can support personal transformation and healing.

The medicine drum, grounded in the earth based practices of shamanic wisdom, connects us with our inner world, our community, nature, and Mother Earth. It is a sacred tool as well as musical instrument that can be used for yourself, or for others, for song, ceremony, celebration, healing, and inducing altered states for shamanic journeying.

Drumming is an ancient cross cultural technology. The beat of the drum regulates our nervous system, brings us in coherence to one another, connects our spirit to the ancient knowledge of the Universe and reunites us to the heartbeat of Mother Earth.

What to expect?

Across the weekend you will:

  • Sit in Sacred Circle to create the ceremonial space and altar, set intentions, share and bare witness to one another
  • Participate in Cacao ceremony
  • Learn about the drum, animal, and wood and their medicines
  • Select your animal hide and frame
  • Experience a Shamanic drum journey to meet the animal of the hide
  • Preparing your hide for the drum
  • Craft your drum beater
  • Meditate to connect with the tree of your frame
  • Reflect on your birth story and/or creative process
  • Weave your drum
  • Receive a drummer blessing and activation

What to bring?

Let’s get practical:

  • Lunch each day
  • A water bottle
  • A wooden stick found or foraged to be your drum beater handle
  • Any sacred items you would like to place on the altar - eg crystals, photo, feathers, medicine tool, jewellery etc.
  • A journal and pen
  • 2 towels (to lay your drum on whilst it is being birthed/made)
  • Pillowcase to take your drum home
  • Any comforts to be comfortable in circle across the weekend eg a shawl/blanket, extra cushions

How to prepare:

Birthing a drum will be informed by your own birth story and how you create in the world. It is helpful to bring as much awareness as you can to your own birth story and/or your creative process - the way you birth creative projects, idea and business ventures.

How you show up also influences your experience and ability to receive so we also recommend being prepared with clear intentions and an open heart and mind.
