Salamander Stroll at Viles Arboretum
Description
Join Viles Arboretum as we go global for Salamander Saturday!
We are proud to register as an official site for the Foundation for the Conservation of Salamanders (FCSal) global initiative.
Amphibians are the "canaries in the coal mine" for our environment, and Maine’s spring wetlands are currently bursting with life. To celebrate, we are hosting a "Slow Hike"—a guided exploration designed to help you see the forest through a smaller lens.
What is a "Slow Hike"?
Forget the fitness tracker! This hike is about curiosity, not distance. We will move slowly through the Arboretum’s key wetland habitats, pausing frequently to:
Identify: Learn to spot the differences between our native species like the Yellow-spotted Salamander and the Red-backed Salamander.
Observe: Safely peek into the vernal pools that act as essential nurseries for these elusive creatures.
Ethics in Action: Learn "Proper Habitat Ethics." We’ll show you the safe way to explore—like the correct way to roll a log ensuring we leave these delicate homes exactly as we found them.
Activities for All Ages
Before or after the stroll stop by our Visitor Center. We will have:
Salamander Puzzles: Piece together the complex life cycle of an amphibian.
Coloring Corner: Get creative with sheets featuring our favorite local species.
Citizen Science: Learn how your observations at Viles contribute to global conservation efforts.
What to Bring
Please wear sturdy, waterproof boots (the trails are likely to be "salamander-friendly" mucky!) and bring your sense of wonder. This event is rain or shine—salamanders actually prefer the damp weather!
Help us put Augusta on the map for amphibian conservation. We can’t wait to stroll with you!
