Saltmarsh Saunter with Gidja Walker

Join AABR for a gentle, knowledge-rich walk through the coastal saltmarsh of Jacks Beach Reserve on Bunurong Country. Guided by ecological consultant and natural systems teacher Gidja Walker, this half-day excursion offers time to observe, question and share insights while moving slowly through a dynamic saltmarsh landscape.

We’ll walk from the Jacks Beach Reserve car park to the point and along the boardwalk, pausing for lunch at the lookout. Along the way, discussion will focus on the coastal saltmarsh aggregate, abutting Ecological Vegetation Classes (EVCs), site geology and land-use history. We’ll look closely at how the system has responded since grazing was removed, including changes in species composition, structure and function.

The day will also unpack current and emerging pressures — weed invasion (including the impacts of non-indigenous native plantings), altered hydrology, climate change and sea level rise — and what these mean for saltmarsh resilience and recovery trajectories. Expect thoughtful conversation grounded in observation, experience and best-practice ecological restoration principles.
