Samba Drumming - 4 week mini course Bloco Winnoch
Description
This is a 4 week mini-course in samba drumming. You will learn how to play the rhythms played in the world famous Rio carnival in a group of up to 20. You will have the chance to try all the instruments, find your niche and learn how to play as a group and experience the teamwork and musical thunder that comes with it. All instruments and equipment will be provided. You don't need to bring anything but yourself! No musical experience is required, but if you do have some we will find plenty ways to stretch your musical brain!
Your tutors will be Doug and Damo who are the directors of Bloco Winnoch. They have years of experience playing, directing and teaching groups to come together and play the authentic rhythms of Brazil. The vibe will be joyful and please be assured that attending on your own is entirely normal.
Thursday evenings 23 July - 13 August 7.30-9.30. £30 for the block.

Yes - we teach every instrument from scratch.
- I am a drummer/musician already, is this any good for me?
Yes. The Brazilian musical tradition is deep and varied with loads of patterns and techniques that will challenge and enrich any level of musicianship.
- How many people are in a samba band?
For the type of carnival rhythms that we will be playing the minimum is around 12. 20 is great, 40 is pure thunder. In Rio de Janeiro you can expect to find 200-300 percussionists in a samba bateria.

Thursday 13th August - Is this how you join the performing band?
Not exactly. But it does put you on the right track if that's something you're interested in. When places to join the band come up, we'd look first to people who have played well and enjoyed the workshops, to come on board.
- Is it for kids?
No, this is an adult class - but watch the website, we do run family workshop from time to time.
