Save the Helmeted Honeyeater
Event description
Join Friends of Helmeted Honeyeater Environmental Coordinator Eliza Lamb at Yellingbo Nature Conservation Area to learn about the importance of floodplains for all species. Hear about the needs of the Helmeted Honeyeater whilst planting habitat for this critically endangered species. Additional activities include a guided habitat walk within the conservation area and recording the different bird species observed as part of Aussie Bird Count Week!
This event is part of the inaugural Birrarung Riverfest, a month-long community celebration of our beautiful and resilient river starting on World Rivers' Day. Together with more than a dozen organisations, the festival provides an opportunity to connect to each other and the river's life force and reimagine the river's future. Engage your 'head, heart and hands' and be inspired to advocate for and care for your Birrarung River and all her critters!
There are 20 events to plan your Birrarung adventure, from art exhibitions, storytelling, river clean-ups, and camping, to cultural walks, platypus monitoring, pollution patrols, and even a book launch. To find out more: https://yarrariver.org.au/rive...
This event and the festival take place on the unceded land and waters of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people of the Kulin Nation. Festival organisers (the Yarra Riverkeeper Association and all partners) pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging and acknowledge their care of Country since time began.
This event is organised and run by Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater: https://www.helmetedhoneyeater...
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE EVENT:
Meet at 10.00am FoHH Education Centre, located at the end of Shield Road, Yellingbo (enter from Macclesfield Road, Yellingbo). After morning tea and a cuppa we will head off for a short habitat walk and bird survey, exploring remnant riparian vegetation and the importance of connectivity in the landscape for all native species. You will then help us plant habitat for the Helmeted Honeyeater and the other species that call Yellingbo NCA home!
Dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes or bring your gumboots. Bring a snack, lunch and water. Toilet facilities available on site. This is an all-ages event; under 18’s must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.
About Yellingbo Nature Conservation Area: The reserve you will be visiting is a reserve for a bird, meaning it isn't like your local park and is not normally accessed by the public. By joining FoHH for this event, you have a unique opportunity to experience first-hand the very special place that is Yellingbo NCA and will get to see the many organisms that call this place home! The month of October is a time when Helmeted Honeyeaters are breeding. At the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater, we like to give the species as much peace and quiet as we can – so they can go about their business with success!
Be a friend to the Helmeted Honeyeater! You can help us to care for this space by taking all your rubbish home with you and putting natural materials back where you found them once you have finished exploring. After your visit, you might also like to explore the many learning resources that are available on our website and if you love what we do, become a member! Visit helmetedhoneyeater.org.au
