School Exclusion Report Launch
Event description
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students have been systemically excluded from public schools across Australia, and continue to be excluded at disproportionate rates. It is vitally important that this history is known and that we work towards creating a more inclusive education system.
Join the National Indigenous Youth Education Coalition (NIYEC) on 21st March 2024 for the national launch of the School Exclusion Project Research Report. An Australian first, the report provides a detailed historical overview of how government laws and policies in each state and territory have, from the nineteenth-century to the present, been applied to exclude Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
The report also details instances of resistance, as families, communities and teachers have fought and continue to fight resolutely to access schooling for their children and to resist discriminatory practices and policies.
The report will be made available publicly online shortly following the launch event. We encourage all participants to share it widely and increase awareness of this important issue.
The launch event will be hosted by NIYEC and will include a reception with light refreshments, followed by a presentation of the report's key findings from Dr Beth Marsden, Dr Mati Keynes and Dr Archie Thomas. The event will also feature a panel discussion with Professor Mark Rose, Alinta Williams, Dr Crystal McKinnon and Coree Thorpe, hosted by Hayley McQuire, with a special spoken word reading from Lay Maloney.
