Event description

Digby Duncan’s iconic documentary Witches and Faggots, Dykes and Poofters tells the story of the violence and fervour, pride and love of the first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras on 24 June 1978. Released only two years after the events, the film is a revelatory portrayal of the queer community at the time, detailing the communities’ responses to social oppression and police violence.

Join us for a rare screening of a keystone of queer Australian history with an introduction from curator and member of the Kink collective Amelia Barikin. This screening is presented alongside our current showcase of contemporary queer Australian art, You Are Here Too .

Director: Digby Duncan

Year: 1980

Length: 45 min

Amelia Barikin is Associate Professor in Art History at the School of Communication and Arts, University of Queensland and a member of the Kink collective. They were previously an ARC Senior Research Associate at the University of Melbourne, and have also worked as a curator and editor with various arts institutions.
