Event description

SEED SAVING FOR BEGINNERS

with JUDY KEATS

Saturday 18 February - 9:30am to 12:00am (2.5 hours)

Join us at Kelmarna Gardens to learn the basics for sourcing your own seeds, establishing your own seed bank, and connecting with your community to share saved seeds.

What to expect:

In this practical workshop your tutor Judy Keats will guide you in how to identify and collect seeds from the garden, how to dry and process seeds for preservation, and how to store them for safe keeping until future growing seasons. You will also explore methods for protecting seeds as they develop on the plant, you will find out which plant types cross-pollinate and ways to cope, and you will learn tips for checking the viability of seeds when you are ready to sow.

This workshop will help you gain the knowledge and confidence so that as a seed saver you can enjoy growing your favourite plant varieties year after year, practically for free, and make the most of sharing them with your community!

Tickets include: admission and guided instruction, including practical experience in the garden and an amount of foraged seeds to take home

What to bring:

Essential:

  • a refillable water bottle (to stay hydrated)
  • weather appropriate gear (to keep comfortable)

Recommended:

  • a notebook and pen (to take notes)
  • a small paper/zip-lock bag (to take seeds home)
  • a face covering or mask (for indoors or close quarters)
