Sewing Basics I: Intro to Home Sewing Machines, with SCRAP!

This workshop is a place for folks new to sewing machines, or just in need of a refresh—a welcoming space to learn and explore.

We'll cover:

  • The essential tools of machine sewing
  • Discuss fabric types, and identify properties like grain and bias
  • Walk through the core anatomy and functions of an introductory to mid-budget sewing machines
  • Talk about stitch length and application, best practices, and seam treatments.

Students will wind bobbins, thread, remove and replace sewing needles, "pick up" the bottom thread, and start experimenting sewing on woven fabrics. With no prescribed project to finish before our workshop ends, students can feel pressure-free, exploring and playing with what a sewing machine can do.

Lead by sewing nerd Kate Burck with SCRAP’s variety of studio sewing machine models. (A great chance to try different manufactures and styles before you invest in your own.)

With your stitchy new confidence you can apply the skills learned in this workshop to your first project in part two of this series, Sewing Basics II: The Basic Tote Bag.

No experience needed.

All tools and materials provided | Ages 16+ (parents must purchase for their children)
