Shaken: When Kink Changes How You See Yourself, Others, and Your World with Ember Solaris

Moral injury is the term used to describe lasting psychological and emotional impact that can follow experiences that violate our moral beliefs, values, or expectations. While moral distress can arise when our values are challenged or come into conflict, moral injury can fundamentally disrupt how we understand ourselves, other people, and the world around us. Although most often discussed in military and healthcare settings, these concepts have meaningful applications to the complicated experiences we encounter in kink.

This class explores how moral distress and moral injury can emerge through kink gone well and kink gone poorly, as well as the social and community-based experiences we have, things that challenge our values, causing or experiencing or witnessing harm, difficult decisions, or betrayals within relationships and communities. We'll examine the roles of guilt, shame, responsibility, and trust, along with how these experiences can influence our identities, relationships, and sense of belonging.

We'll also discuss ways to recognize and navigate moral distress, reconsider our beliefs, and begin rebuilding our relationships with ourselves and others. Whether you've struggled with something you enjoyed, something you did, something that happened to you, or something you witnessed, this class offers a different perspective on how kink can challenge and reshape our understanding of ourselves and the world.

Ember Solaris (they/she) is a Sadistic D-type leaning switch and social scientist who infuses her passion for research into every class she presents. A professional information sponge and infodumper, Ember's classes combine depth, passion, ferocity, and ethical complexity.

Ember collaborates with their co-organizer Ms_Kitten_ to run the Let it Reign and Reign of Blood platforms to provide quality, accessible kink education across experience levels, interests, and intensity preferences.
